2010 Big Game Hunts

I just finished my 2010 big game hunts last week. On our elk, antelope, and sheep hunts we were 100% success again this year. Our rifle mule deer success rate was down to 76% (13 out of 17) which is the second lowest success rate we've ever had. Everyone had an opportunity to take a deer but some of the hunters passed looking for a bigger buck and two of the four unsuccessful hunters had to leave early. Kevin Klumper

Kevin Klumper from Washington purchased the Grizzly Island auction Tule elk tag and took this bull in August with us. Kevin shot the bull at 8 yards after I called it in. The bull gross scores 330 and nets 323. Congratulations to Kevin on a great Tule elk.

2010 Fall Hunting Season

The 2010 hunting season is now in full swing. I've spent the summer scouting for antelope, deer and sheep in Nevada, as well as for tule elk at Grizzly Island and Roosevelt elk on the north coast of California.

The Grizzly Island elk hunt was 3 weeks ago and it went very well. My client got an elk that will probably be in the top 15 B&C. The elk green scored at 329 gross and 323 net.

2009 Hunt Wrap Up

Here is a wrap up of 2009’s hunts.
I had seven elk hunters in California (two Tule elk hunts and five Roosevelt elk hunts). We took six Boone and Crockett bulls and everyone was successful.
In Nevada I had nine mule deer hunters; seven were successful and everyone had opportunities. The biggest buck we took was a 29 inch 4x4 that was just short of 180 inches taken by Mario Pereira on the first day of his hunt. Here's a photo of Mario's buck.


 

Elk and Antelope Hunting Season

It's now elk and antelope hunting season. I just got back from Grizzly Island where we took a nice tule bull with a bow. It gross scored 320 and net was 312 5/8. It could come in first with Pope and Young, depending on what it scores after it dries and it will be number one with SCI archery.
I am off scouting for deer and guiding antelope hunters in Nevada. Then it's back to California to guide 4 elk hunts: 2 Northwestern hunts and the Del Norte hunt for Roosevelt bulls and East Park Reservoir for tule elk.

American River Shad and Stripers

I hope everyone is doing well and weathering the poor economy. I've been on the American River the last two days shad and striper fishing and here's a quick run down of how it went.

Wednesday I met a buddy of mine and we got on the water about 11 am and only fished for about 3 hours (not exactly prime time but it was all the time we had). We spent more time fishing for stripers than shad and caught one and lost another. We stopped and fished for shad in two spots for a total of one hour and landed 10 which is pretty good for the middle of the day. For those of you that have not shad fished before, they are about 2 - 5 pounds and put up a great fight on light tackle spinning gear or fly rods.
Yesterday, I had two clients and one had never fly fished before so we split our time between stripers and shad. We used conventional gear with plugs for the stripers and landed two and lost two and saw quite a few more including one that I would guess to be about 20 - 25 pounds.
We landed about 10 or 12 shad and lost at least that many more on flies and conventional gear both. The shad were not biting as well as the day before but we saw hundreds of them. They are pretty thick in there right now. The stripers are just starting and should get better between now and the end of August.
I am running a special until the end of June for half day shad and striper trips on the American River. My normal rate is $325 for four hours of fishing and the special price is $300 and I'm doing five hours instead of four. This includes drinks and all your gear but no lunch. We can fly fish or use conventional gear on these trips. I'm also running a full day special (8 hours with lunch) good on the American or the Yuba and is good until the end of August. If you book two trips at my normal price of $425, you get $75 off your second trip.

Successful 2008 Big Game Hunts; Still time to Mountain Lion, Coyote andChukar Hunt

My big game seasons have just ended and we had another great year with 100% success for every species. I just returned from my fall mule deer hunts in Nevada and while the deer population was down this year, we saw some really nice bucks. Mike Barkdoll was fortunate enough to take a nice 31 inch buck on his hunt and it was the second biggest buck we saw during his hunt. (You can see the photos of Mike's buck on my website in the Photo Gallery under Nevada Deer Hunting.) We had actually seen a much bigger buck 3 times in a day and half but couldn’t get a shot at him. When I spotted this buck at about 1 miles first thing in the morning, we thought it was the bigger buck but after a stalk to 300 yards, we realized it was a different big buck and Mike was able to take him at 310 yards. Congratulations Mike.

I am heading back to Nevada today to guide chukar hunters and soon we will be lion hunting. I have rented a house on a ranch in central Nevada and will be running my chukar and lion hunts from there. We stayed at the ranch house for all of my deer hunts and it was a huge hit with all the hunters. If anyone is interested in chukar, lion, or coyote hunts, I still have availability for this year.

The chukar hunting is better than it was last year but not as good as three or four years ago. We were seeing plenty of birds the first 5 days of the season and had a couple of days where we shot limits.

2008 Fall Hunting Season

It's finally my favorite time of year - “ hunting season! The season has been going well so far. I guided 3 Nevada antelope hunters last month and they all got their antelope within an hour of opening morning. Everyone was happy with their animal. Right now I'm guiding the California north coast elk hunts. My first client took a nice 6 x 6 bull on the Del Norte hunt. I start guiding for the Northwestern hunt tomorrow. I have access to some great private property and have seen some really nice bulls.

I'll be home the middle of September for a week or so before going out to Nevada to do some more scouting for deer season. While I'm home, I hope to get my 11-month-old yellow lab puppy on some quail. My older lab is now 7 years old, so I got a puppy to take over when my older dog retires. So far the puppy looks to be a great bird dog. She is a pointing lab so I've been learning a lot about pointing dogs. Both dogs will be raring to go come chukar season in Nevada. Chukar season starts in October, so if you're interested in booking a 3 day Nevada chukar hunt, let me know. My Nevada deer hunts start October 4 and run through November 5, but I still have room for some chukar hunters.

In November I'll be doing both elk hunts and chukar hunts in Nevada and plan on being home by Thanksgiving. Hope everyone has a great hunting season!

Happy New Year

Happy New Year! Hope everyone's year has started off well. Now that the holidays are behind us, it's time to look forward towards two of my favorite things: Nevada mule deer hunting and fly fishing on the Yuba River.

It's that time of year again when we start to think about the upcoming big game seasons. The applications for the Nevada special nonresident guide draw for mule deer tags will be out in the next couple of weeks with a deadline of early March. This drawing is how most of my clients get their mule deer tags in Nevada. I've been running about 60% draw odds over the last 7 years or so and between 85% and 100% success on the hunts.

On the fly fishing front, the Yuba River has started to pick up. There have been quite a few stoneflies out and as soon as we get a little more visibility in the water we should start seeing some decent dry fly fishing. The snow pack in the Sierras is way above average and that is a good thing for the upcoming year of fishing.

Last year we had way below average snow pack and the fishing really suffered. The bugs are starting to come back on the Yuba after the floods of a couple years ago pretty well scoured the river of most of the bug life. We should have some pretty good dry fly fishing for wild rainbow trout on the Yuba River in the next few weeks and the fishing should stay good through July this year. I'll just be guiding fly fishermen in February and March and then guiding both turkey hunters and fly fishermen in April. Hopefully we'll get back to the great spring hatches that the Yuba is known for.

Fall Hunting & Fishing

I just returned from a great fall of guiding big game hunters in Nevada and California. Out of 19 hunters, 17 were successful and the two that weren't had to leave after two days of a 5 day hunt. Pictures are now in the photo gallery section of the site from this year. I had two elk hunters in California and both were successful and killed Roosevelt elk that will make the record book. Congratulations Larry and LaDonna. In Nevada both our elk hunters were successful taking 6 point bulls with the biggest one scoring 360 inches. We were seeing 340 to 360 class bulls most days on these hunts and they are something you should definitely apply for. Most days we were seeing 8 to 15 bulls and most of those were branch antlered bulls. This is a great hunt and I do have Nevada landowner elk tags available for the 2008 season but you need to book early because they don't last long.

I guided 4 antelope hunters in Nevada that all bought landowner tags and they were all successful. The antelope were 14 to 15 7/8 inches tall with the best one being 15 1/2 inches tall and grossing 81 2/8. I will have more Nevada landowner antelope tags available for the 2008 season if anyone is interested. These ranches are loaded with antelope and make for a very fun hunt. The question is not if you are going to get one, but how big he will be. These ranches have produced some record book animals in the past.

Our Nevada mule deer hunts were very successful again this year. This makes three years in a row that everyone that stayed more than 2 days on a 5 day hunt was successful. We had 9 out of 11 hunters take deer with several in the 24 to 26 inch range that were very tall. The best buck was a 26 inch 5×5 that was the heaviest horned buck we have ever had a client take. With the new late hunts starting this year and a lot fewer tags in the field, these hunts were great and I expect them to only get better. We've been averaging about 60% draw success in the nonresident guide draw and this is a great opportunity for a nonresident to draw an otherwise very difficult Nevada mule deer tag. I also have Nevada landowner deer tags available for 2008.

I did a 2 1/2 day chukar hunt in Nevada last Friday – Sunday and we got 4 in a 1/2 day of hunting on Friday and limited out on Saturday and Sunday for two hunters. It's a pretty bad chukar year but there are still plenty of birds in pockets if you know where to find them. Chukar season runs through the end of January and I do have openings left.

As soon as we get some snow in Nevada we'll be guiding lion hunts. This is the most exciting hunting I've ever done. There is nothing quite like being 10 feet from a mountain lion and having it open its mouth and hiss at you. Our guided lion hunts are 7 days and the cost is $4000 and it includes your meals and lodging. Your hunting license and lion tag can be purchased over the counter and you are allowed two lions per year. This is a great opportunity to get out and hunt during the winter and have a hunt you will not soon forget.

I'm leaving tomorrow for a week to go over and scout the G3 Goodale mule deer hunt in California. The Goodale hunt is probably the best mule deer hunt we have here in California and I just got Forest Service permits to start guiding deer hunts over there.  Hopefully I will get some good photos of bucks and post them on my site when I return.

Fly fishing on the Yuba River is a little slow right now. I did a trip the other day and we caught 4 trout and lost 7 or 8. We did get a few fish to come up for big dries though and that was nice. The fish were good size with most of them being 14 – 18 inches and full of fight. Fishing should really start to pick up by mid February and we usually have good dry fly fishing and hatches in March and April.

I just got back from a month of guiding antelope hunters in Nevada and elk hunters in California. All my clients were successful. The biggest antelope grossed 81 2/8 and both my California elk hunters killed B&C bulls.

I will be leaving for Nevada to guide deer and elk hunters next week. I’ll be gone for about 6 weeks but you can still reach me by e-mail and phone.
