Nevada Draw For 2014 Season!

Hello Everyone,

The deadline to apply for big game tags in Nevada is April 21. You can go to www.huntnevada.com and apply online. I encourage everyone to buy the license and build bonus points for each species.

Here are my recommendations for the 2014 drawing for deer, sheep, antelope, and elk if you would like to go on a guided hunt with G & J Outdoors. If you have any questions about quality of animals for a given hunt or anything else, give me a call before you apply.

If you don't want to draw the tag this year you can apply for a point for each species and it will increase your odds of drawing later on.

For deer I would apply in this order. Those of you that already applied in the nonresident guide draw and have tags or didn't draw cannot take part in the deer drawing, but you can and should apply for the other species.

Rifle Deer Hunts
1.081
2.021
3.022
4.011-013 Early
5.141-145 Early

 Archery Deer Hunts
1. 081
2. 131-134
3.011-013
4. 065
5. 141-145

Muzzleloader Deer Hunts
1. 081
2. 131-134
3. 065
4. 011-013
5.  161-164

For nonresident California bighorn sheep, I would apply in this order:

1.032
2.034
3.012

For resident California bighorn sheep, I would apply in this order:
1.032
2.031
3.034
4.012
5.068

For nonresident Nelson (desert) bighorn sheep, I would apply in this order:
1.268
2.267
3.271
4.184
5.182

You may also think about unit 213 for a last choice. This is an easy hunt for smaller sheep with rams in the 140s.

For resident Nelson (desert) bighorn sheep I would apply in this order:
1.253
2.268
3.267
4.271
5.252

For elk I would apply in this order:
1.161-164, 171-173 Muzzleloader
2.062, 064, 066-068 Muzzleloader
3.161-164, 171-173 Late
4.o76, 077, 079, 081 Early
5.076, 077, 079, 081 Late
6.161-164, 171-173 Early
7.062, 064, 066-068 Early

The muzzleloader hunts are rut hunts and you have to hunt with open sights. With today's muzzleloaders people are shooting 200 yards, but it does require some practice. If you just want all rifle hunts, use choices 6 and 7 as your 4th and 5th choice.

For archery elk I would apply in this order:
1. 231, 241, 242
2. 161-164, 171-173
3. 076, 077, 079, 081
4. 221-223
5. 111-115

For antelope I would apply in this order:
1.041, 042 early
2.041, 042 late
3.021, 022
4.065, 142, 144A
5.141, 143, 151-156

You can also take a look at my website at www.gandjoutdoors.com. Let me know if you have any questions and good luck in the drawing. Thanks and take care.  Cary Jellison

12 Tips to hunting Chukar in Nevada

12 Tips to Hunting Chukar

Chukar hunting is all about increasing your chances of being successful. Hunting for the wily birds is best when they are forced to concentrate their numbers. Early in the season when it is usually dry you will find the birds tied to water sources making it easier to hunt them. Here are some tips to help with your success.

1.Read the chukar hunting 2013 -2014 forecast developed by NDOW biologists using aerial survey techniques in traditional chukar mountain ranges. Understand it is merely a guide. It is probably not lucrative in the long run to only focus on those mountain ranges identified in the forecast as having average or above average bird numbers.

2.Know the water sources in the area and purchase a guzzler atlas from one of NDOWs offices for only $50.

3.Hunt an area that has multiple water sources or a perennial stream that is still providing water. After two years of drought conditions, smaller springs that are isolated may not support multiple coveys of birds as they had in the past.

4.Seek out areas with fewer roads to avoid congestion often observed in canyon bottoms.

5.Prepare for the hike. If you have never hunted chukar before, consider it nature’s Stairmaster on level 20 with adrenalin added. Get into shape and make sure you have good boots for the long hikes up and down mountains.

6.Stop and listen for birds throughout the day. Sometimes just sitting on a rock for 10 minutes can reveal where birds might be located.

7.Understand the season you are hunting. If you are hunting early in the season, concentrate your efforts on water sources and focus on north facing where there tends to be more forage availability. If it’s late in the season and snow is on the ground, concentrate on southern exposed hill sides.

8.All chukar hunters who are successful know it’s all about the dog and the relationship they have with the dog that makes the hunt.

9.Regardless of the weather, bring plenty of water for you and your dog. This will likely be the first hunt of the season for many dog handlers and dogs, so don’t chance getting dehydrated.

10.Get familiar with your gun. Know how it patterns and what shot will work best for you.

11.Take your time and shoot straight, you may not get a lot of chances!

12.Remember folks, when go on your first chukar hunting trip, you go for fun and the rest of your life you go for revenge.

Nevada hunters need to file their Big Game Hunt Questionnaires

NDOW Reminds Hunters to File Their Big Game Hunt Questionnaires

The Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) is reminding big game hunters sooner is better than later when it comes to completing and submitting their Big Game Hunt Questionnaires. The important hunting and harvest data gathered from the questionnaires helps guide game management, including tag quotas, in future hunting seasons.

"Once big game seasons end, hunters’ attention can quickly turn to other pursuits and filing their questionnaire can soon be forgotten, "said John McKay, NDOW outdoor education coordinator. "Completing and submitting the questionnaire quickly, after the hunt can save hunters hassle and money later.

Big game hunt questionnaires must be properly completed and received by the Wildlife Administrative Services Office (WASO) or submitted online at www.huntnevada.com no later than 5 p.m., on January 31, or the next business day if January 31 falls on a weekend or state holiday.

Questionnaires may be submitted online at www.huntnevada.com, by phone, or faxed to (775) 423-0799. Hunters should follow-up with the WASO to make sure their questionnaires have been received.

Hunters who fail to return the big game questionnaire or the information required by the questionnaire within the period specified, or who submits incomplete or false information on the questionnaire will be denied all big game tags for one year.

Californa Roosevelt Elk in 2013

Hello Everyone,

The 2013 hunting season is underway and I just returned from a month of  scouting and guiding elk hunters in California and Nevada. For more information on our elk hunts you can see our website at www.gandjoutdoors.com or give me a call at 530-263-0492.

This year we had 7 Roosevelt elk hunters in California and one early Rocky Mountain elk hunt in Nevada. We were not 100% success this year like we normally are with 6 out of our 8 hunters taking bulls this year. The two unsuccessful hunters both passed up 6 point bulls on their hunts so we were 100% opportunity. The rut was late this year and the first couple hunts were not as good as normal. We did take 3 Roosevelt elk that will easily qualify for the Boone and Crockett record book minimum of 290 inches. We have now had 22 hunters take bulls in California that will qualify for Boone and Crockett since 1999.

Len Guldman took this 7x8 Roosevelt elk in California that gross scored 344 7/8. Len was guided by Aaron Griffith, Mark Duarte, and myself. Congratulations Len on a great bull.

Charlie Hoppin took this great Roosevelt elk on the Northwestern hunt in California while hunting with guide Mark Duarte. The bull grossed 362 inches and is a 9x9 with so much mass that you can't get both hands around the antlers by the fourth and fifth points. Congratulations Charlie on the bull of several life times.
